A veteran who served active duty United States Marine Corps for six years. Al retired from Springdale Fire Department as a driver/operator, where he served for over 27 years. An active member of the American Legion for 14 years. As Historian, he was responsible for the registering of the Springdale American Legion Hut on the National Registry of Historic Places. He currently serves as Commander and has been for the last three years. He attends Calvary Baptist Church with his wife Darla. Both his daughter and his son graduated from Springdale High School and are both veterans of the United States Marine Corps.

  • Awards: Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal with Six Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Society of American Military Engineers National Technology Advancement Medal

Mrs. Jannie Layne - Board member

Jannie has lived in Springdale for close to 60 years. She currently sits on the Board of Directors for Bo’s Blessings, a veteran’s non-profit she established in memory of her son 12-year Army Veteran Bo Swearingen. She is an active member of the RNCIC board of directors, VA Family Council, Fayetteville Veterans Cemetery Council and the NW Arkansas Veterans Coalition. She also works as a nurse in local medical clinics of Northwest Arkansas.
